Alt-rock legends confirm massive arena shows with special guests Interpol and Ecca Vandal – first NZ tour in nearly 10 years!
Deftones emerged from Sacramento, California in 1988, blending alternative metal, shoegaze, and experimental rock into a sound that has remained influential for decades. Formed by vocalist Chino Moreno, guitarist Stephen Carpenter, drummer Abe Cunningham, and bassist Chi Cheng, the band gained mainstream attention with their 1997 album Around the Fur, before achieving major success with 2000’s White Pony. That record, featuring the hit “Change (In the House of Flies),” marked a shift toward a more atmospheric and genre-defying approach.
Over the years, Deftones have continued evolving, releasing critically acclaimed albums like Diamond Eyes (2010) and Koi No Yokan (2012), while maintaining a loyal global fanbase. Their sound balances heavy riffs with ethereal textures, and Moreno’s dynamic vocals remain central to their identity. Despite lineup changes and the tragic passing of Cheng in 2013, the band has stayed creatively resilient.
In recent years, Deftones have leaned into both nostalgia and forward momentum. Their latest material continues to explore dreamy, layered production while retaining the raw intensity that defined their early work. This duality is especially evident in their current tour, which has become one of their most anticipated in years.
The new tour showcases a career-spanning setlist, mixing classics like “My Own Summer” with newer tracks that highlight their evolving sonic palette. Known for immersive live performances, the band emphasizes atmosphere – moody lighting, textured soundscapes, and emotionally charged delivery. Fans have noted a renewed energy in their shows, with tighter musicianship and a deeper connection between the band and audience.
The tour also reflects Deftones’ enduring relevance. Rather than relying solely on legacy appeal, they continue to attract younger audiences discovering their music for the first time. Sold-out venues across Europe and North America underline their staying power.
As they move through this latest chapter, Deftones remain a rare act: one that honors its past while still pushing boundaries. Their current tour is less a victory lap and more a statement. They are still evolving, still vital, and still one of the most compelling bands in modern rock.
On 13 May, they return to Auckland for a gig at Spark Arena, and bring two amazing special guests: Interpol and Ecca Vandal.
