Emerging from Beverly, Massachusetts, in the early 2000s, Caspian have spent more than two decades establishing themselves as one of the defining names in modern instrumental post-rock. Known for their expansive guitar arrangements and atmospheric textures, the American quintet has developed a distinctive sound that balances delicate melodies with immense sonic power.
Formed in 2003, Caspian began building their reputation through ambitious compositions that explored the expressive possibilities of instrumental music. Their debut album, The Four Trees, arrived in 2007, followed by Tertia in 2009, which helped expand their international audience. With its intricate guitar work and dynamic shifts between restraint and intensity, the band demonstrated how instrumental rock could communicate complex emotions without relying on conventional song structures or vocals.
Their third album, Waking Season (2012), marked another significant step forward. Produced by Matt Bayles, the record received widespread acclaim for its immersive production and carefully constructed arrangements. Caspian continued to refine their approach on Dust and Disquiet (2015), combining soaring post-rock passages with heavier, more introspective moments. Across these releases, the band created music that felt simultaneously intimate and monumental, moving between quiet contemplation and overwhelming intensity.
Caspian’s journey has also been shaped by personal loss. In 2013, bassist Chris Friedrich died, a devastating event that affected the band and its community. Rather than abandoning their musical path, the remaining members continued to create and perform, carrying their shared history into subsequent work.
In 2020, the band released On Circles, an album that blended post-rock with elements of shoegaze, ambient music, electronics and post-metal. Its layered arrangements reflected a group willing to explore new textures while retaining the emotional directness at the heart of its music. Following the album, Caspian continued performing live, including a tour celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2024.
Now, six years after On Circles, Caspian are preparing to open a new chapter with their sixth studio album, Caspian, released today through Wax Bodega. Recorded with producer Brett Romnes, the six-track, 39-minute album sees the band returning to the musical foundations that have defined their career: evocative melodies, intricate guitar textures, patient repetition and powerful crescendos. The singles “Remain” and “Far Country” offer glimpses of a record focused less on radical reinvention than on rediscovering the emotional honesty and structural simplicity that first inspired the group. With its self-titled release, Caspian reaffirm their commitment to instrumental music that rewards patience, invites immersion and finds extraordinary depth in the interplay between quiet reflection and overwhelming sonic force.
