Three German dates for Brighton band Lovejoy in September

Emerging from Brighton’s ever-vibrant music scene in 2021, Lovejoy have become one of the most talked-about British indie rock bands of their generation. Blending sharp songwriting, infectious guitar hooks and emotionally charged lyrics with a distinctly modern, internet-savvy identity, the quartet have transformed from an online phenomenon into an internationally touring band with a devoted global following.

Lovejoy consists of vocalist and rhythm guitarist William “Wilbur” Gold, lead guitarist Joe Goldsmith, bassist Ash Kabosu and drummer Mark Boardman. Although Gold’s popularity as a content creator introduced many listeners to the band, Lovejoy quickly established themselves on their own musical merits. Rather than functioning as a frontman-backed project, all four members contribute to the songwriting process, giving the band a collaborative sound that balances catchy melodies with thoughtful lyricism and dynamic musicianship.

The band’s debut EP, Are You Alright?, arrived in May 2021 and immediately attracted attention through tracks such as “One Day” and “Sex Sells.” Recorded in Brighton over just a few days, the release showcased an energetic mix of indie rock, pop-punk and witty, conversational storytelling. Later the same year, Lovejoy followed up with Pebble Brain, an EP that expanded both their sonic palette and lyrical ambition, tackling themes ranging from fractured relationships to political frustration.

By 2023, Lovejoy had evolved into a formidable live act. Their third EP, Wake Up & It’s Over, featured fan favourites including “Call Me What You Like” and “Portrait of a Blank Slate,” demonstrating greater musical maturity while retaining the band’s trademark blend of humour, vulnerability and irresistible hooks. The release propelled them onto major festival stages, with appearances at Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds, Lollapalooza, Rock Werchter and Montreux Jazz Festival, confirming that Lovejoy’s appeal extended far beyond their online origins.

Musically, Lovejoy draw inspiration from British indie staples such as Arctic Monkeys, Los Campesinos! and The Killers while incorporating elements of pop-punk and alternative rock. Their songs often juxtapose upbeat instrumentals with introspective lyrics exploring anxiety, failed relationships, growing up and the awkwardness of modern life. The result is a catalogue that feels simultaneously nostalgic and contemporary.

Following a brief hiatus in 2024, the band returned with renewed momentum. In 2025 they released their long-awaited debut album, One Simple Trick, further cementing their reputation as one of Britain’s most exciting young guitar bands. The record demonstrated a broader sonic range while preserving the honesty and immediacy that had defined their earlier work.

In September, the Brighton band hits Germany for three dates.

  • 19 September at Bürgerhaus Stollwerck, Cologne
  • 20 September at Metropol, Berlin
  • 22 September at Gruenspan, Hamburg

About J.N.

Music researcher with an unhealthy passion for music and music festivals. Former studio owner, semi-functional drummer and with a fairly good collection of old analogue synthesizers from the 70's. Indie rock, post rock, electronic/industrial and drum & bass (kind of a mix, yeah?) are usual stuff in my playlists but everything that sounds good will fit in.
