Swedish band Hellsongs has spent more than two decades reshaping the sound of heavy metal, without ever sounding traditionally “metal.” Formed in 2004 in a barn outside Gothenburg, the group built its identity on an unlikely idea: transforming classic hard rock and metal songs into soft, acoustic, almost lounge-style interpretations.
From the start, the band stood apart. Instead of distortion and aggression, they used clear female vocals, piano, acoustic guitars, and gentle arrangements to reinterpret songs by bands like Iron Maiden, AC/DC, and Black Sabbath. Their early releases, such as Lounge (2006) and Hymns in the Key of 666 (2008), quickly gained attention across Europe, turning them into a cult live act and earning chart success in Sweden.
Over the years, lineup changes and evolving musical ambitions led to albums like Minor Misdemeanors (2010) and These Are Evil Times (2013), the latter marking a shift toward original material alongside covers.
After intensive touring and creative shifts, the band went on hiatus in the mid-2010s. For nearly a decade, Hellsongs remained largely inactive until their gradual return in the early 2020s signaled a renewed sense of purpose. The group re-emerged “older, more devoted, and angrier (in a kind way)”, bringing back their signature blend of irony, warmth, and social awareness. Their comeback culminated in the 2024 album The Return of the Hellsingers, their first full-length release in over ten years. To support the album, Hellsongs launched an extensive European tour, continuing into 2026 under titles like The Return of the Hellsingers Pt. 3. The tour marks not just a promotion cycle, but a celebration of the band’s 20-year journey, returning to the stage with renewed energy and a strong emphasis on live connection.
On 23 April, Hellsongs stop off at Don’t Panic in Essen – don’t miss it!
