Originally emerging from the hardcore punk scene, California band AFI quickly gained attention for their fast, aggressive sound and DIY ethic. Their early albums, such as Answer That and Stay Fashionable (1995) and Black Sails in the Sunset (1999), helped establish them as a key act in underground punk.
In the early 2000s, AFI evolved stylistically, incorporating elements of alternative rock, gothic aesthetics, and melodic songwriting. This shift reached mainstream success with their 2003 album Sing the Sorrow, which included the hit single “Miss Murder.” The album propelled them into international recognition.
Over the years, AFI has continued to reinvent their sound, experimenting with electronic and atmospheric influences on albums like Decemberunderground (2006) and Burials (2013). Known for their dramatic imagery, loyal fanbase, and energetic live performances, AFI remains an influential band that bridges punk roots with broader alternative rock appeal.
In the early 2020s, AFI entered a new phase marked by experimentation and adaptation to the changing music industry. Their eleventh studio album, Bodies (2021), showcased a continued shift toward post-punk and new wave influences, blending atmospheric textures with their established alternative rock sound.
The album was written before the COVID-19 pandemic but released during it, which delayed its rollout and affected touring plans. Despite a series of singles released ahead of time, Bodies received mixed critical reactions and had a more modest commercial performance compared to some of their earlier releases.
After the pandemic period, AFI returned to live performances, including a notable 2023 event where they played their influential album Sing the Sorrow in full for its 20th anniversary – an event promoted as a one-time performance for longtime fans.
The band remained active with touring and new material, leading to the release of their twelfth studio album, Silver Bleeds the Black Sun… in October 2025. The record continued their evolution toward darker, gothic rock-inspired sounds and was preceded by the single “Behind the Clock.”
This summer, the band pop by for a one-off show at Live Music Hall in Cologne.
