The Drop Festival (Torquay): Review

Tammy Walters May 23, 2019

Torquay; surf, sand, sun, and a sandwich of superstar sound and skill thanks to The Drop Festival. Yet again the festival turned up the dial on their line up of Aussie artists and bands and it did not disappoint! From Chitra through to Angus and Julia Stone, the Drop Festival Torquay was full of spectacular outfits and even more stunning sets!

The early birds were treated to the genre-bending stylings of Chitra. Winning the Triple J Unearthed competition, the Melbourne songstress looked at home on the stage and was a welcome addition to The Drop family. Her powerhouse voice soared and we wanted more! A refreshing start to the day!

Alex The Astronaut

A fan-made sign waving in the crowd said it all; Alex is out of this world! As the sun shined down on the crowd, Alex was the real ray of sunshine. Her face beamed as she drifted through her tracks to an ecstatic crowd. “Not Worth Hiding”, “Rockstar City” and “Waste of Time” were definite crowd favourites.

The Jungle Giants

A gigantic set from the giants of the jungle. Playing banger after banger as the sun went down over the Torquay Common, The Jungle Giants had the crowd in their hands. With their vibrant outfits, their energetic presence and infectious spirit, their set was fun in every sense of the word. “Feel The Way I Do” was a clear highlight!

Hockey Dad

The biggest set of the day! Following the fun set from The Jungle Giants, Hockey Dad sent the crowd into a wild frenzy. The sell-out crowd were electrifying for the Windang duo, cramming into every nook and cranny of the space, with mosh pits breaking out as the boys made their way through a mix of fan favourites and new additions including “Homely Feeling”, “Join The Club”, “Sweet Release” and “I Need A Woman”. The boys were clearly buzzing from the crowd reception, giving this set their everything!

Client Liaison

I now have a new found world of love for Client Liaison. Owning The Drop stage, the indie pop act built on from the electrifying set from Hockey Dad, delivering an animalistic experience. From their matching Coachella attire to the galactic visuals and out of body dance moves, Client Liaison riled the crowd up. Flailing arms filled the air as Monte bounced through the photographers pit, feeling the rhythm inside. A memorable set from the foursome!

Angus & Julia Stone

Wrapping up a huge day in the most fitting way possible, siblings Angus and Julia Stone drifted us off into the night. Their dreamy set was elevated by the stunning illuminated tree backdrop as their angelic voices filled the sea of phone lights. Absolute perfection! If this is the standard from The Drop, next year can’t come quick enough!!
