Plain White T’s were a staple of my pop-punk/emo upbringing. “A Lonely September” and “Hey There Delilah” used to blast from my room when I was way too young to relate, and in the process of figuring out if the skater kids in my class were right when they said the music I listened to was ‘[insert offensive term here]’. Obviously, I’ve figured it out by now (that pop-punk/emo pride is real.) And yet all of that was fifteen years ago, and I’m not the same as I was back then. And equally, Plain White T’s have evolved as people and musicians. Although still nailing the art of songwriting that propelled them into the centre of rock and even mainstream charts more than a decade ago, the band has taken on a fresh new vibe, drawing on electronic and R’n’B elements on their latest LP “Parallel Universe”.
I was ultra excited to discover Plain White T’s on the already insane line-up of this year’s Slam Dunk Festival. Before they took to the stage, we talked about recording cutlery noises in Tom’s kitchen, concerning lyrics and questionable party habits, as well as music video ideas (spoiler alert: De’Mar hates them all) and why tour managing the band is like herding little kids.
